Kirby Atrium

Renovated in 2023
Used by various academic departments
About
Renovated in 2023, the Kirby atrium, a common and informal learning space managed by Wake Forest University’s Department of Economics and in the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences’ footprint. Before renovation, this common area was a bit of an afterthought, a deary lobby noted by department leadership as being underutilized despite its central location and accessibility. Renovations were limited to some finishes, including sound-buffering artwork and greenery, and more flexbile furniture. Designers and the department stakeholders prioritized practical furniture choices: mobile bar-height tables made of a writable surface that could also be used as refreshment tables for department events and tables and chairs of varied height to promote choice and accessibility. Use surveys report students, faculty, and staff use this common space for group office hours and study; meals; tutoring; group/collaborative work; testing make-up; and lunch in small groups with faculty and students. One faculty member appreciated that the public space allows for making learning visible. |
