Math & Stats Center

Wake Forest University’s peer-to-peer Mathematics and Statistics tutoring space moved this student-facing group from the third floor of Manchester Hall to the first floor of Kirby Hall, a major artery of student traffic. Renovations transformed an underutilized and awkward classroom and faculty office suite into a more purpose-built, user-focused space that serves students in an accessible and prominent storefront space with a welcoming check-in station and common areas and break out rooms for group and individual tutoring. Natural light, storage, mobile and fixed writing surfaces, mobile furniture, and digital and wireless technology are abundant. Such features highlight collaborative teaching and learning and support Wake Forest’s mission-driven expectations for personal, challenging, and relevant education. The Math & Stats Center tutors provided support for over 9,300 student visits in 2019.

One medium-sized classroom, one seminar room, and graduate student and faculty office and community spaces were included in this project. This renovation project was a collaboration between external and internal partners: contractor Whiting-Turner, STITCH Design shop, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Math & Stats Center leadership. Learning Spaces membership provided guidance and feedback.
